Alaska joined the Union on January 3, 1959. It became the 49th state of the United States. It is the largest state in the U.S. by area, encompassing vast wilderness, mountains, forests, and glaciers. It contains 17 of the 20 highest peaks in the United States, including Denali, the highest peak in North America.

William Allen Egan became the first governor of the state of Alaska on January 3, 1959.
