North Dakota joined the Union on November 2, 1889. It was admitted as the 39th state, alongside South Dakota. This was part of the U.S. government’s efforts to admit new states into the Union from the territories that were part of the United States at the time. North and South Dakota were admitted on the same day, and there’s a bit of a friendly rivalry over which was admitted first, as President Benjamin Harrison shuffled the statehood papers before signing them, keeping the order a secret.
John Miller became the first governor of the state of North Dakota on November 20, 1889.
Here is a chronological list of the governors of North Dakota from first to last.
