Utah joined the Union on January 4, 1896, becoming the 45th state. Its admission followed a long process of negotiation between Mormon settlers, who were the dominant group in the territory, and the U.S. government. The negotiations were primarily focused on issues related to the practice of polygamy, which was a significant aspect of Mormon belief at the time. The eventual abandonment of polygamy by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) cleared the way for Utah’s statehood.
Heber Manning Wells became the first governor of the state of Utah on January 6, 1896.
