Oregon joined the Union on February 14, 1859, as the 33rd state. This event marked Oregon’s official transition from a U.S. territory to a full member of the United States, allowing it to participate in the federal government and have representation in Congress.

John Whiteaker became the first governor of the state of Oregon on July 8, 1858.
